Samsung has launched a high-definition (HD) video camera that can also snap high-resolution digital photos and take smooth slow-motion video.

The HMX20, which was shown in prototype form at CES in Las Vegas in January, can manage 1080p full high definition (1,920 pixel by 1,080 pixel resolution) and 8-megapixel images. It’s also capable of snapping pictures while video is being recorded– a feature that is becoming popular on cameras but is still not standard.

To frame shots there’s a 2.7-inch widescreen monitor that swings out of the side of the camera much like most other camcorders.

A special feature is the 300 frames per second (fps) shooting mode for slow-motion video. Video is usually recorded at 30 fps and becomes jumpy when slowed down, but by recording at 300 fps it can be slowed down by as much as 10 times and still appear smooth.

The camera has a round body and is designed to be easily held in one hand. Its compact size is aided by the lack of a tape or optical storage disc drive. Instead it stores video and images on flash memory. It has 8G bytes of built-in memory and this can be extended with an SD or MMC memory card.

The camera has been announced for South Korea where it will cost 899,000 won (US$857). Launch details for other markets have not been set yet.

Kyocera today announced that it has developed the world’s fastest high-resolution inkjet printhead — the main imaging component used in inkjet printers — for commercial applications. The company will commence global sales of the new KJ4 Series printhead in April 2008.

The KJ4 Series offers outstanding reliability and productivity, with full-color print speeds of up to 200 meters per minute at 600 x 480 dpi, or 150 meters per minute at 600 x 600 dpi (1,000 sheets of A4 paper per minute). The KJ4 Series also offers the widest print line of any printhead in its class, spanning 4.25 inches (108 millimeters).

During development, Kyocera applied its proprietary piezoelectric ceramics technology to create a compact piezo actuator3 for a critical element of the printhead.

Aluratek recently unveiled a new lineup of digital picture frames, and announced that they are fully compatible with Mac OS 10.4. Included in this release are the 10.5-inch ADMPF110 and 210 ($180), the 11-inch ADMPF311F($200), the 12-inch ADMPF312F($230), and the 15-inch ADMPF315F($300). The picture frames feature a high resolution TFT true color LCD screen, a wooden frame, and built in speakers, which allow users to listen to MP3 or WMA music files, view videos, or set up presentations with background music. The frames accept connections from digital cameras, USB flash drives, memory cards or a direct computer connection, and support drag-and-drop functionality. Aluratek’s frames can be mounted on a wall or displayed on a surface using the included stand, and they come with a kit containing a remote, USB 2.0 cable, power adapter, and instructions.
