Medion’s Akoya Mini E1210 budget ultraportable had little to differentiate it from the rest of the crowded market on announcement, but perhaps some unboxing photos will make the little laptop more appealing. MSI-Wind.de have just brought one home, and they’ll be the ideal people to confirm whether, as predicted, the E1210 is really just an MSI Wind in a different chassis.

That means a 10-inch display, Intel Atom processor and 1.8-inch hard-drive. There’s also 1GB of RAM and two USB ports, a memory card reader, VGA-output, ethernet port and webcam. Medion claim it’ll be available in white as well as the “titanium grey” you can see here, but we’re yet to see the white version (perhaps it looks too much like press photos of the Wind?).

No word on how much MSI-Wind.de paid for their E1210; the original price always sounded a little high, certainly if you tried to translate it to a US figure: €399 in Europe, which works out to $638. However Medion still haven’t said whether the notebook will ever actually make it outside of Europe.

Just glancing at the specifications sheet, you can tell Sony’s 13.3-inch VAIO VGN-SZ791N packs quite the punch for its size.
Just glancing at the specifications sheet, you can tell Sony’s 13.3-inch VAIO VGN-SZ791N packs quite the punch for its size. After all, who wouldn’t be pleased with a 2.5GHz T9300 CPU, discrete GeForce 8400M graphics, 4GB of RAM and a built-in optical drive? Still, what looks good on paper doesn’t always translate into perfection on your lap, but according to a glowing review posted over at PC Mag, this is one of those cases in which it does. When benchmarked, this critter bested the highly-praised Asus U6S, Acer Ferrari 1100, Fujitsu P8010 and MacBook Air in the vast majority of tests — heck, it even cranked out a whopping 2 frames-per-second running Crysis at high quality (seriously, that’s an accomplishment). All in all, this beauty managed to impress in basically every category, and with 4.5 out of 5 stars and an Editor’s Choice badge, it seems that you’d be hard pressed to find a better ultraportable for $2,500.

You’d have to turn your brain all the way back to September to spot the first time we got wind of Acer’s Ferrari 1100 laptop, but the folks over at PC Mag have finally received one in and took the time to spill the beans on how it fared. Right out of the box, it was criticized for being entirely too hefty for a 12.1-incher, but then again, it does have an integrated DVD burner. Still, the lack of a LED-backlit display along with the totally underwhelming performance when benchmarked was hard to overlook. ‘Course, it wasn’t exactly a slouch, but it certainly didn’t live up to expectations. Unfortunately for folks hoping for the best on this rig, it looks as if your $1,860 could be spent better elsewhere, but feel free to dig into the whole review to find out exactly why it earned just three out of those five oh-so-coveted stars.

ASUS certainly got our attention with its ultraportable U6S laptop, and it looks like it piqued the interest of the folks at HotHardware as well, who’ve now turned out a full review of the diminutive, leather-bound system. While they expectedly found a few shortcomings with laptop — namely, lackluster battery life (even for an ultraportable) — they found a lot more to like about it, including “excellent” performance, plenty of features (including HSDPA), low heat and noise, an always-welcome LED display, and “cool leather palm rests,” although that last bit is certainly a matter of taste.Best of all, that all comes at a relatively reasonable $1,650 price tag, which leads HotHardware to declare the U6S “one of the best values in the luxury notebook niche.”
